Work begins on site after controversial approval given to turn historic Warwick pub into house
By James Smith 1st Jun 2026
Renovations have begun on site at an historic Warwick pub after planning permission was granted to turn it into a house.
A long-running planning saga around the Punch Bowl was brought to an end last spring when Warwick District Council (WDC) gave the green light for it to be repurposed.
The 200-year-old inn at The Butts has sat empty since September 2020, but Secret Properties Ltd is set to transform it.
A previous application - first submitted in 2021 - to turn the grade II listed Punch Bowl into a home was refused following a swathe of public objections.
There was further opposition to the application which was eventually approved, including an objection from Warwick Town Council.
Speaking at WDC's planning committee last year, Cllr Dave Skinner questioned how hard the applicant had tried to let out the venue, before bidding to turn it into a house.
The scheme will see some of the 20th century extensions removed, and some of the ground floor doors and windows reinstated.
There will also be internal alterations, with the kitchens removed.
