As we near the halfway point of the year, Warwick Nub News is taking a look back, to highlight some of the stories you may have missed.

Here are the most read Warwick news stories so far, for 2025.

5. 'Mothballed' Warwick offices costing council £265k a year

Warwickshire County Council's "mothballed" office block in the heart of Warwick is still costing £265,000 per year. 

The revelation came during Tuesday's last full council meeting before May's local elections and included the final set of portfolio holder questions to be faced by deputy leader Cllr Peter Butlin, the political lead on finance and property who is not standing for re-election.

Cllr John Holland asked about the county council's Barrack Street offices which are no longer in use, although the multi-storey car park underneath is still used by staff and councillors.

4. Application for new Lidl between Warwick and Leamington takes step forward

Supermarket giant Lidl has been given a boost in its plans to open a new supermarket between Warwick and Leamington Spa.

The discount retailer had submitted a scheme to Warwick District Council which would see Europa House on Heathcote Lane demolished to make way for the new store.

Plans show the warehouse building on the 2.12 acre site would make way for the new supermarket and 125-vehicle car park.

3. Troubled Victorian mansion house hotel near Warwick on the market after latest closure

A troubled south Warwickshire hotel has been put on the market just weeks after closing once again.

Wroxall Abbey shut suddenly in January just two years after the site had reopened under new owners.

The news was the latest in a series of problems for the Birmingham Road former manor house, which had closed previously in 2019.

After two years of sitting empty, it reopened again in 2021 under the Trinity Hotel Group, but would shut once more in August 2022 Trinity went into administration.

2. A46 Closes and Reopens for HS2 Works

We are cheating a bit for the second best-read story of 2025 so far - as in reality our coverage of the three-week A46 closure spanned many pieces.

Having broken the news of when the road would close, we then got down to the dual carriageway to go behind the scenes during the works.

Ultimately, the road actually reopened earlier than planned after the huge new bridge structure was moved into place.

And we shared lots of photos and videos of the works.

1. Human remains found in park in search for missing South Warwickshire man

February brought the sad news that human remains were been found in a Coventry park in the search for a missing Warwick man, who is believed to have been murdered.

Stefan Watkins – known as Lee or LeeLee – was last seen on 6 May 2023 when he left his home in Warwick during a street party to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

Warwickshire Police released multiple calls for information in the two years following his disappearance, but on February 4 the force confirmed remains have been discovered in Charterhouse Fields.
