Application for new Lidl between Warwick and Leamington takes step forward

Supermarket giant Lidl has been given a boost in its plans to open a new supermarket between Warwick and Leamington Spa.
The discount retailer had submitted a scheme to Warwick District Council which would see Europa House on Heathcote Lane demolished to make way for the new store.
Plans show the warehouse building on the 2.12 acre site would make way for the new supermarket and 125-vehicle car park.
The application to the local authority at this stage asked whether an 'environmental impact assessment' is needed for the development, before a full planning application is submitted.
"It is considered that the current proposal will not have any significant effects on the application site or its immediate surroundings, nor do the characteristics and location of development indicate that the proposal is likely to give rise to significant environmental effects," it said.
And in a boost for Lidl, the council has said an assessment will not be needed.
"Based on the information provided having regard to the specific characterises of the development, its location and potential impacts, it is not considered that an Environmental Statement will be required on this basis," a council report said.
Plans show the Lidl store would be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
Access to the site will be taken from Heathcote Lane.
Europa House has been on the market with property agent Wareing and Co and is currently listed as 'under offer'.
The application comes after Lidl this year once again asked locals to help find a potential new store location in South Warwickshire.
Lidl already has a store at nearby Myton Road. It is unclear whether the new site would be a relocation, or whether the company would operate both sites.
A full planning application for the development is expected in the coming months.
