Having been tasked by landlord Everards Brewery to give a new lease of life to the Stratford Road pub, Caviar & Chips has certainly done that since opening No. 34 Garden and Grill in March.

Formerly known as the Racehorse, the Warwick pub seems to have already got back on its feet under the new team, having struggled to recover from the pandemic before the relaunch earlier this year.

Having run the Virgins and Castle in Kenilworth for over two years, Caviar & Chips has brought in a completely new concept at No. 34.

As the name would suggest, the venue offers two different menus - the 'garden' filled with plant-based and vegan dishes, and the 'grill' comprising British farming and local produce.

We were invited to try it for ourselves, and we were not disappointed.

With a selection of cask ales and draft lagers on offer I settled for a Estrella while my companion whittled down the extensive cocktail menu to chose a mojito.

Caviar & Chips said it wants No.34 to be a 'beautiful, tranquil space where we bring the outdoors in'

We were then given a selection of fresh breads with butter and balsamic vinegar and olive oil to dip into as we chose our starters.

I sampled the slow-cooked pork belly with hickory BBQ sauce, celeriac remoulade and salsa verde, while my partner took the opportunity to mix and match between the two menus to have then sautéed padron peppers from the garden menu.

Both dishes were generous portions, beautifully presented and received very well.

For mains we tried the dressed crab with chips and sourdough bread - the catch of the day - and the chicken caesar salad (with a side order of chips...).

Again the portions were more than generous. And despite having filled up slightly on the delicious bread to start, both were enjoyed thoroughly with only a few leaves left behind!

And yet we did both find space for desert.

I had the eton mess which was a light and refreshing end to the meal. And despite the name it was very attractively laid out on the plate, with a few larger pieces of meringue layered on top of the raspberries and cream.

My partner tried the raspberry blondie which was equally enjoyable, sweet but not too sweet, and served with chantilly cream.

Both options, it was noted, were among the many vegan-friendly deserts. While both of us eat meat, we did comment on what a wide choice there was for people of all dietary requirements.

And then we come on to the surroundings of the recently-refurbished pub.

When Caviar & Chips first announced the opening of No.34 it said it wanted to create a "beautiful, tranquil space where we bring the outdoors in".

"Touches of nature and all things that connect us with the natural world. A restaurant, dining and relaxing place where you can unwind, recharge and boost your wellbeing," the company said.

Previously called the Racehorse, No.34 Garden and Grill reopened its doors in March 2022

That, they have achieved.

The evening was certainly relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable, aided both by the surroundings and the waiting staff that served us.

On what was a fairly busy evening, we were sat next to a few other tables other but at no point did we feel the venue was too noisy, or that we could not hear each other.

That is perhaps even more telling given that the weekly quiz was happening at the other side of the pub, and we could barely hear it in the background.

Furthermore, the staff were could not have done more for us, and we got the sense that they genuinely wanted all the customers to have an evening to remember.
