Warwickshire Police says it will "respond robustly" to any criminal activity around a Warwick hotel housing asylum seekers, saying its role is to "protect everyone concerned from harm".

It was revealed last month the Delta Hotel has been closed to house 360 asylum seekers for a short period of time, with the news bringing a mixed reaction from locals.

The county and district councils have already called for "compassion, and support for people in need" from the community.

Local MP Matt Western has also visited the Stratford Road site, which he says is needed due to "the massive backlog in cases" nationwide.

And a statement released by Warwickshire Police on Monday (December 2) has given a further update on the situation.

"We received short notice of the decision, and our local safer neighbourhood team has worked hard to put measures in place swiftly to understand and monitor concerns and provide reassurance," it said.

"The Home Office maintains responsibility for security at the site, but we are keen to provide reassurance around our approach to policing in the area.

"As police, our role is to protect everyone concerned from harm.

"To do this, we’ll monitor concerns in the area and respond promptly to any reports of antisocial behaviour or criminality. We’ll continue to provide a policing presence to give visible physical reassurance and opportunity to engage with people in the area.

"We won’t tolerate crime or antisocial behaviour, and we will respond robustly where we need to."

The site is working as part of a government process to handle legitimate asylum seekers from bogus applications, Mr Western revealed after his visit.

The Labour MP also said health checks and testing are undertaken prior to a person arriving at the hotel, with DNA records also taken.

Bookings are not being taken at the edge of town site, and security has been installed.

The hotel's signs have also be covered.
