A Warwick district councillor has said the new three-weekly bin collections will take "a bit of getting used to" as they get underway this week.

The new 123+ collections started across Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon districts yesterday (August 1), despite some residents not having had their new food caddies and blue-lidded recycling bins delivered.

And whilst there have been multiple reports of bins not being collected on the first day, councillors have said some teething problems were to be expected.

Cllr Moira-Ann Grainger, neighbourhood and leisure portfolio holder at Warwick District Council said: "We appreciate that the new service will take a bit of getting used to for our residents.

"However once in the swing of things households can soon reap the benefits of an easy and efficient service which will increase their recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

"In addition, instead of contributing to greenhouse gas emissions our District can collectively generate renewable energy through the food waste collections."

She added: "We appreciate our residents' patience and understanding as we work quickly to get this new service up and running. We'll keep our website and social media updated on a regular basis to keep everyone informed.

"We know that not everyone has access to the internet, so would ask you all to check in with your neighbours to keep them updated and let them know what is happening."

The new service are being delivered to through a joint waste contract with Biffa Waste Services Ltd.

Cllr Ian Shenton, climate change portfolio holder at Stratford District Council said residents needed to play their part and support the changes.

"It's important for future generations that we do as much as we can now to limit and reverse the effects of increasing temperatures caused by Greenhouse gases," he said.

"Moving to the 123+ system is part of what we as individuals can do to help in this fight, as it should encourage increased levels of recycling and less waste, including food waste, going to landfill.

"We can put your waste materials to good use, and we have a legal requirement to recycle as much household waste as we reasonably can. It costs money to collect and dispose of the waste in your grey bin. Recycling all that you can helps to keep council tax down." 

Warwick District Council is also encouraging residents to download the new app to keep up to date with bin collections.
