The final touches to a major roadworks scheme in Warwick's town centre are due to be completed in the coming weeks, the county council has confirmed.

The huge project at St John's began at the end of last year, and has seen a significant amount of disruption to motorists.

A shared cycleway/footpath, new crossings, new traffic lights, bike racks and a new service road have been built outside the shops.

Warwickshire County Council said it wanted to "improve connectivity and enhance the experience for pedestrians, cyclists and business users" in the area.

While traffic lights and much of the industrial equipment has been removed from St John's, the council confirmed that the final works will be completed in the coming weeks.

A local authority spokesperson told Nub News: "The St John's Junction improvement scheme in Warwick is now nearing completion, with the vast majority of works finished and the transformed gateway taking shape.

"Recent weeks have seen the removal of barriers, restoring pedestrian access and providing new cycle parking and additional vehicle parking spaces.

"Completed works include significant footway and carriageway improvements, upgraded traffic signals, resurfacing, improved pedestrian, wheeling and cycling routes, and changes to parking and junction layouts.

"The remaining work, which is due to be completed in the coming weeks, includes the installation of benches and planters funded by the local business community, along with planting around the newly installed trees.

"The scheme forms part of the wider Warwick town centre programme and has been delivered following extensive engagement with local businesses, residents, accessibility groups and community organisations."

Works over the summer have seen several Sunday road closures around Smith Street.
