Developer to purchase 'off site credits' to hit biodiversity goals for 16 new Warwick industrial units

The developer behind a newly approved scheme to create small industrial units between Warwick and Leamington will need to purchase ‘off site credits’ to try and reach a net gain in biodiversity, with councillors eager these are found nearby.
Councillors this week approved the scheme for Fusiliers Way which will see 16 new industrial units built in five different blocks.
Warwickshire Property Development Ltd was given approval for the “small starter” units, but has been asked by Warwick District Council’s planning committee to invest in boosting biodiversity as close to the project as possible.
Speaking at the meeting this week, Cllr James Kennedy said: “I have a question about the biodiversity net gain that is not going to be achieved on site and therefore the developers will be required to purchase off site ‘credits’.
“Is there any stipulation as to where these credits should be applied?
“Are there local schemes to ensure the investment in biodiversity net gain is done as locally as possible to the site and in particular within this district so we get the benefits of it.”
Councillors agreed to approve the planning application but included a note which “highlighted the preference for the off site credits…to be acquired from local schemes to benefit Warwick district”.
The development will also include 116 parking spaces on the plot next to Warwick Technology Park.
The site is part of a larger area of former farm land allocated for new homes, a secondary school, primary school, a local centre and community stadium.
