Councillors slam 'devastating' unauthorised makeover at historic Warwick pub

Town councillors have voiced their disapproval that the new owners of a Warwick pub completed a major renovation project without planning permission.
Brunning & Price is currently seeking retrospective approval for a range of works at The Globe which were completed earlier this year.
The Theatre Street pub was closed for four months for the makeover, welcoming customers again in June.
However, the reopening came just days before Warwick District Council refused planning permission for the changes, which had already been completed.
Members at Warwick Town Council have now objected to the latest application for the renovations, describing the approach by Brunning & Price as "devastating".
"Devastating to receive a retrospective application for an historic site," the objection from the town council said.
"The negative impact on accessibility whilst the works were being undertaken without permission should not be ignored.
"No comments received from conservation or highways.
"Clarity is still needed about who owns the land where the decking platform of the rear terrace has been built as the applicant has advised it is not them in the application form.
"Has permission from the landowner been granted? Are the plans within the boundary of ownership?"
If this new application is refused by the district council, the business risks having to rip out the renovations.
The latest scheme is asking for permission for changes to the rear courtyard including a timber pergola, planters, landscaping and changes to the seating.
This as well as changes to the kitchen and service areas, removal of stud walls, a new laundry store, a new fireplace and various other works.
"The proposed internal and external alterations have avoided works to the historic parts of this listed building and instead affect recent extensions to this building and the external courtyard area," the application stated.
It continued: "The planning history of the application site demonstrates that the hotel/public house/restaurant use has been the subject of several phases of extensions and associated alterations over the years.
"This is to be expected for a commercial leisure and hospitality facility such as this, which must continue to enhance and improve upon its customer facilities and offers, in order to remain commercially viable and vibrant."
Listed building permission for the works was refused by the council at the end of June - after the pub had reopened.
The application was refused by council planners who said the changes would cause "less than substantial harm to the designated heritage assets" around Theatre Street and The Holloway.
In a response to a request for comment from Nub News, Brunning & Price simply said: "We acknowledge that we are in a planning consent process for the Globe Warwick and we are working closely with the Local Authority on this matter."
