Demolishing and redeveloping a closed Warwick car park is "not a straightforward problem to solve", the chief executive of Warwick District Council has said.

At last week's full council meeting, Warwick Councillor Daniel Browne asked for an update on the Linen Street Car Park which has remained shut since July 2021.

He said the site was "long overdue" progress and said many local residents were left "frustrated" by the apparent lack of movement.

"There has been progress on other eyesores within Warwick, but nothing on Linen Street car park yet," he said.

"Currently it is being left to rot and residents are quite rightly concerned and frustrated about that.

"Looking at the forward plan I can see that there is currently no timescale for addressing the Linen Street car park issue."

The town centre facility was shut four years ago due to "structural issues," with the upper levels having already been closed off for a number of years.

Following Cllr Browne's question, chief exec Chris Elliot told councillors: "It isn't that nothing has been happening, we all need to understand that while nothing is straightforward this is really not straightforward as a project to solve.

"Closing the car park was the easy bit quite frankly.

"The difficulty in what we have been trying to do is to try and identify alternative uses for the development of the site that can also stack up financially."

The council has applied for public grants to help fund the redevelopment, but has not secured any.

Mr Elliot said: "We are trying to find out a way in which we can minimise the cost to the public purse but to try and resolve the problem that residents very understandably identify.

"It isn't that anything isn't being done, it is more that it is really difficult to get to a solution that isn't going to cost the earth at a time when we don't have the earth to spend.

"We will try to bring this to a head one way or another."
