REVIEW: Gin tasting at the Warwickshire Gin Company

Tucked away under the arches near Leamington Railway Station is the Victoria Business Centre, which is home to a number of independent firms.
Among them is the Warwickshire Gin Company, which offers regular gin tasting experiences, right where the distillery's artisan beverages are created.
We were lucky (and I mean lucky) enough to be given the chance to head down and give the evening a try.
Upon arriving at the Neilston Street venue we were each handed a welcome drink, which featured the company's Leamington on Parade gin, paired with Mediterranean Tonic.
This coupled with the fairy lights around the room, comfy armchairs and background music, put us instantly at ease.
Alongside the five other couples, were invited to take a seat in the intimate distillery, where our hosts Olivia and Finlay made us feel very welcome.
As we sipped our way through drink number one, we were given a whistle-stop tour of the history of the distillery (no spoilers here), before being talked through the distilling process, with the still Warwickshire Gin Company uses, a perfect prop!
What struck me during the talk was the fact that Olivia works in the distillery day to day, creating the gins, rums and vodka on offer from the Leamington firm.
This gave an extra level of detail and passion to the talk; hearing from someone with first-hand experience of the business elevated the evening hugely.
Having now wrapped our heads around the distilling process, we were given the chance to try Leamington on Parade neat, as well as The Philosopher's Daughter - a gin made using rosehip peel, rose petals, apple and cherries.
Again we were given the backstory to each product (I won't ruin the surprise) before being asked to choose a favourite to have as our second long drink of the night - which was elegantly served with Fever Tree tonic and fresh fruit garnish.
As we enjoyed our next drink, we were then given the backstory for the next two gins - Peeping Tom and Kingmaker.
As with all the company's gins, the names are both drawn from local history and were both very enjoyable.
Once again we were given a small sample to try before making a selection for the next drink of the night.
This was then followed by what was described as the three 'marmite' options.
Another gin - Palota - which was flavoured with star anise, a spiced rum recently released by Warwickshire Gin Company - Pugilist - and a vodka - also Kingmaker- were offered out as samples.
What I liked about this part of the evening was we were given very clear description of what each product would taste like, and then were given the offer to try, or to try with a variety of mixers.
I declined to try the vodka, and my partner opted not to have the final gin - but at no point were we made to feel like we were making a fuss, or being in anyway rude to the producer!
And given the expectation some people may not fancy any of the three, for our final drink we were offered any of the products we had tried all night.
My companion chose to have a spiced rum (testament to the new range) with coke while I went right back to the beginning and had a Leamington on Parade with tonic.
At the end of the two-hour experience we were told another group would be coming in half an hour later - but we did not feel rushed to leave.
And having stocked our spirits cabinet (making the most of the discount received on the night) we departed - slightly tipsier than we had arrived!
In all seriousness though, at £20 per person, it struck me as excellent value; four drinks, a pleasant setting and a great experience.
And what a perfect time of the year to have this recommended to you - an excellent option for a Christmas event, or a gift and something to look forward to in the new year.
