Warwickshire man charged for wearing offensive Hillsborough shirt at FA Cup final
A Warwickshire man has been charged after wearing a football shirt which appeared to make an offence reference to the 97 fans who died as part of the Hillsborough Disaster.
James White, 33, was charged with displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
He was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on Saturday (June 3) at the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City.
He was bailed to appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court in London today (June 5).
Photographs of his Manchester United shirt circulated on social media over the weekend, showing the words "Not Enough" above the number 97.
A force statement said: "Criminal proceedings are active and the defendants has the right to a fair trial.
"There should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
The incident comes just months after Liverpool FC and Manchester United jointly called on fans to stop "tragedy chanting".
The Met also said 22 other people were arrested at the Wembley FA Cup final on Saturday for offences including assault, affray, possession of drugs and drunk and disorderly behaviour.
Enquiries continue following an item thrown onto the pitch shortly after the Manchester United goal. The force said no arrests had been made so far.
