Warwick's Aylesford School may not return to its main building in time for the new school year, as works on site continue.

Students at the Tapping Way school have been forced to learn from temporary classrooms this year following the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) and asbestos last summer.

For a while pupils were mainly having to learn from home, as the school worked to find a temporary solution.

But in an update to parents yesterday (June 26), the school said it may not be able to return to the main building in September 2024.

"While we had initially hoped to return to our main school building in September 2024, following a full assessment by the Department for Education (DfE) and our building and design contractors, this timeframe will no longer be possible due to the complexities of the works which are needed," the update said.

"We are currently negotiating the final contract with our principal contractor.

"Once this has been agreed by both the school and the DfE we will be able share an updated timeline for the completion of the building work.

"In the meantime, we are working tirelessly to ensure we are upholding the high standards of education our students and community deserve and have been assured the works will be carried out as quickly, safely and effectively as possible."

The school is also encouraging families to come and see the standard of the temporary classrooms to be reassured they are "high quality".

The update added: "We cannot thank our families, students and staff enough for their continued understanding, patience and support and are grateful to our students for their maturity and adaptability throughout this process, and for settling so well into our temporary accommodation.

"As ever, we will continue to always place the health, safety and best interests of our students and staff at the heart of our approach and will share further updates on timescales as soon as we have them."
