A Warwick pub is set to reopen today less then a week after a fire destroyed its outdoor seating area.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at The Nelson Pub in the early hours of Tuesday morning (June 28).

The fire destroyed much of the outside canopy and furniture, as well as causing damage to the toilets.

And whilst the rest of the Emscote Road pub was untouched, landlord Tim Rogers said it could have been much worse as his pregnant step-daughter was trapped inside the building.

"My partner and I were away to celebrate her birthday," he explained.

"We were woken by my step-daughter who called us at about 3am to say she was trapped in the building.

"The whole time we have lived there she has only ever gone out the back door which is where the fire was.

"So we had to tell her where to get a key for the front door and then help her get out. Obviously being pregnant she was taken to hospital but she is fine now."

The pub has been closed since the blaze, with Tim spending the week making the back garden safe again for customers.

The boiler has also been fixed to provide hot water, and the toilets have been cleaned and made usable.

"The main damage was to the inside toilets, the rest of the pub wasn't touched," Tim said.

"But the outdoor area was hit badly.

"I have had to pull down one of the structures because it wasn't safe. Then we have tidied things up and roped them off as best we can."

He added: "We are of course looking forward to reopening but as much as anything to start earning again.

"Obviously when we are closed we aren't earning which is a problem."

And with messages of support and offers of assistance flooding in from the local community, Tim said he was humbled by the reaction from local people.

"It has been overwhelming, we have had so many messages of support to help, which has been absolutely great," he said.

The pub will reopen at 3pm today.
