A Warwick pub has won its planning battle to turn its car park into a garden area, following a unanimous decision by councillors.

Warwick District Council's planning committee last night (November 5) approved an application from The Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel.

The Crompton Street inn said there was ample parking in the local area, and argued its off street car park is hard for motorists to access as they have to drive through a narrow arch.

Residents had objected to the application on the grounds of a lack of local parking, but council officers said there is enough local provision.

Planning officer Millie Flynn explained to councillors: “The only concerns that have come forward are the objections received as part of this application.

"Members should be mindful that while the area is heavily restricted in terms of permits - so the business would not be able to apply for those residents’ permits - a parking survey was carried out which did show sufficient capacity.

"That allowed officers to assess the amenity impact on those local residents."

In its application to Warwick District Council, the pub wrote: "The Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel has for some years entered into an agreement with Warwick Racecourse for the provision of comprehensive off-street parking not only for all its guests but also its Staff.

"These alternative parking arrangements, together with the results of the attached parking survey, which indicate sufficient parking capacity in the vicinity, negate the need for these planning conditions.

"Removal of these conditions will allow for the alternative development of that area as multi-functional garden space, enhancing the amenity of the Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel and the facilities available to locals and visitors alike, as well as ensuring its continued success and contribution to the local economy."

While there were objections, there were also 15 supportive comments from locals who stated the importance of supporting local business.
