A Warwick bar has been refused permission to stay open for just 30 minutes extra on three days per week after councillors agreed a later closing time would negatively impact local residents.

Planning permission to extend the opening hours at Brogan's Irish Bar - formerly the Iron Works - to 11.30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays had been sought from Warwick District Council.

The application would also have allowed the Market Place venue to stay open into the early hours on Good Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

But councillors at last week's planning committee meeting unanimously voted against the new closing times.

An objection from Environment Health had been lodged which said the venue had previously stayed open past 11pm and received a lot of complaints as a result.

While Cllr Bill Gifford added: "It seems to me that the committee that restricted the hours made the right decision and the evidence that we have got from environmental health suggests it would be sensible, it would be wise to stick to the hours that we already have."

The application also pointed to a number of other local drinking establishments that stay open past 11pm and said they were all close to residential properties.

"I have the feeling that I get discriminated, for one or the other reason and will take it to committee if needed and will go into appeal if my application will not be in line with the rest of Warwick," the application said.

But business manager Sandip Sahota told councillors the Market Place venue's location was not suitable for late opening.

"The examples that have been referred to are in different parts of the town centre so in this specific case it's the nature of the character of the area which is mixed use," he said.

"There are other bars that are open later that are in more commercial parts of the town centre whereas this is considered to be a more residential area."
