UPDATE: Police investigating fire at abandoned building as 'substantial damage' caused
The district council has said it is "deeply saddened" that a fire in an abandoned building in Warwick yesterday has left "substantial damage".
Fire crews were rushed to the scene on Fusiliers Way on Monday (October 28) afternoon, with neighbours told to keep their windows closed during the incident due to "large volumes of smoke".
Firefighters from Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, Stratford-upon-Avon and Gaydon attended the scene and brought the blaze under control.
But a statement from Warwick District Council today said the incident had now been reported to the police.
"Warwick District Council is deeply saddened to report that a fire which broke out in the afternoon of Monday 28 October has caused substantial damage to the grade II listed former farmhouse located just off Fusiliers Way," the statement said.
"Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service continue to monitor the building and 24-hour security around the site will remain in place. Officers from the Council will then undergo measures to make the remaining structure safe and prevent any further damage.
"The incident has been reported to the police. Any member of the public with further information is asked to contact Warwickshire Police (reference 210 28/10/2024.)"
