Thieves attacked the driver of a lorry parked near Warwick as they tried to steal thousands of pounds worth of pink gin in the early hours of the morning.

Warwickshire Police's operational patrol unit was called to the lorry park at Warwick services southbound this morning (March 21) where offenders had arrived in a cloned Mercedes HGV and cut the curtain side to an articulated trailer full of Gordon's Pink Gin.

The offenders were disturbed by the driver and when challenged they attacked the driver punching him to the face and knocking him to the floor.

The offenders abandoned the cloned lorry and the gin and made off just before police arrived.

A police statement said: "The driver was treated at the scene and was thankfully ok.

"We recovered the cloned Mercedes for a full forensic examination.

"The Gin was returned back to the original trailer."
