Young people in Warwick are being given the chance to trade at a special market coming to the town in July as part of local efforts to support young people in the area.

Teenage Market events - a national initiative giving young people a platform to showcase their talents and skills - is coming to Warwick on Saturday, 18 July, with support from the area's local councils.

The scheme gives young people the chance to trade at events and connect with local markets, providing a platform for them to trial new business ideas and sell creative products. In Warwick, it means youngsters will be able to get involved by setting up their own stall for free.

The event will be connected to Warwick's regular market, which operates every Saturday and has been running for almost 800 years.

Cllr Simon Pargeter, Mayor of Warwick, said: "Our young people are not just the future of Warwick - they are part of its present. The Teenage Market gives them a platform to share their ideas, talents and businesses, while helping to bring new energy into the town centre. It reflects the ambitions of both the Youth Council and the Town Centre Vision to create a town where young people can thrive, contribute and be proud of the place they call home. We hope to host many more in the future"

Warwick Town Council has worked in partnership with Warwickshire County Council, Warwick District Council, Place for Youth CIC and local events provider CJ's Events to help deliver the Teenage Market 'as part of a shared commitment to ensure there is provision for young people in the area.'

The initiative ties in with Warwick Town Council's Vision for the county town, which includes 'a pledge to create a communal and youthful town as one of its four pillars, as well as Warwick District Council's aspirations to see more events for young people in the town, along with strong synergies across a wide range of the Warwickshire County Council's priorities and particularly, in its connections to skills development and youth engagement.'

Cllr Ella Billiald, Portfolio Holder for Arts, Culture and Economy at Warwick District Council, shared: "I am delighted that young people are being given this quite unique opportunity to experience trading first-hand, developing their business skills and possibly inspiring some future entrepreneurs. This is a superb opportunity for young people to experience the excitement of trading in our popular charter market, promoting their own products and showing how product concepts can generate an income. They will work alongside our regular market traders and enjoy the vibrant, lively atmosphere of our weekly market in Warwick. As the market authority for the district, the council is keen to support the next generation of budding market traders, and we hope this is the first of many events which appeal to our young people in the district."

Cllr Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, added: "The Teenage Markets are a great addition to our towns. Not only do they provide a place for young entrepreneurs to showcase their talents, but they also encourage more people into our towns to support our young creatives and explore the other great local businesses on offer."

Young people interested in having a stall at the Teenage Market on 18 July should email [email protected] for more information.
