'Substantial refurbishment and modernisation' is needed at Warwick Hospital according to an investigation into local NHS facilities.

The external report into Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford hospitals found that many of the buildings were not up to modern standards and that it was hard for patients and visitors to find their way around the sites.

The day surgery unit and radiology department were deemed unfit for purpose, whilst the report found a number of services were still being delivered from temporary buildings on site.

However, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust has announced a new strategy to fix the problems.

The plan said there would be particular focus on Warwick given the recent investment at the trust's other sites.

The centre of the site, which is currently in a "poor condition and is not as functional as it could be", will be redeveloped and a new main entrance will be built.

The hospital will also build a temporary three-storey surgical hub, as well as two temporary wards with treatment rooms and waiting and clinic areas.

The plan also states that building a new elective hub in Warwick is "critical" to meet the national target of 30 per cent more elective activity by 2024/25.

Works will be completed in phases to minimise disruption and there will be no reduction in car parking.
