Plans to build a new special needs school off Fusiliers Way have been handed a boost by council planners.

G F Tomlinson Building Limited and the Department for Education (DfE) have revealed the plans for the 'alternative provision school' which it says will provide spaces for 64 children aged 11 to 16.

A full planning application is expected to be submitted for the development soon, but before this, the DfE asked Warwick District Council whether it needed to complete a full environmental impact assessment for the land before the scheme could progress.

Council planners have confirmed an environmental assessment is not needed.

"It is not considered that the proposals would result in significant environmental effects to an extent that would require an environmental statement," planners concluded.

The one hectare plot of land is already earmarked for education and is part of a major new housing estate being built off Fusiliers Way.

Plans show the school would also have a multi use games area, as well as cycle access.

"The building is proposed to be two storeys in height," the application said.

"The scale and massing of the development have been informed by the site context and topography, in order to ensure it doesn't have an adverse impact on the character of the surrounding area.

"Due to the topography of the site, it is not anticipated that the proposed building will result in an adverse visual impact."

More details of the school will be revealed when the full planning application is submitted.
