A scheme designed to improve the safety on roads around a Warwick primary school could take a major step forward this week, despite the criticism of one local resident.

Warwickshire County Council is set to make a decision on parking restrictions on Woodloes Avenue South and Deansway around Woodloes Primary School this Friday (July 17).

A public consultation on the scheme was launched this spring as the local authority looks to tackle "excessive levels of parking" and "blind spots" around the school.

If approved, the plans would see sections with no or limited parking created.

A council report said: "There are consistently high levels of on street parking along Woodloes Avenue South at most times of the day, which results in blind spots and vehicles travelling around bends and past junctions on the wrong side of the road.

"Proposals have been put forward to regulate where parking can be safely accommodated on the road by means of double yellow lines (No Waiting at Any Time), in order to allow free flow of traffic and improved visibility in an area with high levels of pedestrian and cycle travel."

However, three written objections have been made to the changes, with one resident critical the restrictions will not fix the problem.

"Your proposals do not go far enough to make any difference to this situation," one objector wrote.

"Your proposal seeks to leave the large section between Brese Avenue and The Greenway as unrestricted and only deal with the corner bend just past The Greenway and up to Smythe Close.

"This still makes using this section of road dangerous and does not alleviate the issues.

"I cannot believe there has not yet been a fatality."

This was not the view of all objectors though, with another saying there is no need for the restrictions.

They wrote: "As someone who lives and works from home here, I believe the proposal is unnecessary and disproportionate.

"In my experience, traffic levels on the road are not high enough to justify such extensive restrictions.

"Parked vehicles do not create dangerous conditions, and the road continues to function safely with cars parked along it.

"I am particularly concerned about the wider impact.

"It is well known that healthcare workers use this road due to limited hospital parking, and removing this option will make it harder for them to get to work.

"This feels especially unreasonable without addressing the underlying lack of provision."

Portfolio holder for transport and planning, Cllr Stephen Shaw, will make a decision on the scheme on Friday.
