£2m bridge for ‘isolated’ 900 new homes still years away

Plans for a £2 million foot and cycle bridge to serve an "isolated" and unpopular Warwick housing development are set to move forward this week – but residents are still in for a wait.
The Asps, to south of Warwick and north-west of Bishop's Tachbrook, is a 900-home development that was controversially called in and signed off by then-secretary of state Greg Clark in 2016 despite the development initially being rejected.
A Warwickshire County Council report, set to be considered by deputy leader and portfolio holder for property and finance Cllr James Crocker on Friday (October 16) sets out long-term proposals to build two foot and cycle bridges.
The first will be over Tach Brook to connect The Asps to the Beauchamp Park development with a second over Europa Way, to come forward as a second project, to connect both developments to Heathcote.
The report, authored by county council engineering design team manager Claire John, highlights how The Asps remains "isolated" for residents without their own vehicles with active travel options only realistic for "proficient cyclists".
It notes that "no bus routes are available until the park and ride has been delivered" – earlier this year residents launched a petition to the county council asking for support for a half-hourly bus service – with school children having to "rely on taxis to get to school due to the lack of walking and cycling provisions".
Providing the means to get over Tach Brook will enable residents of The Asps to link with more established paths connected to Europa Way but the current £353,000 proposal, which is being funded by Warwick District Council, only gets the first bridge designed and to the point of seeking planning permission, work that is expected to be completed "within the 2027-28 financial year".
The report adds that the full scheme cost of £2 million – which includes that initial £353,000 – "is anticipated" to be funded by the district with another report coming to the county council "should full funding be identified".
It adds: "The remaining programme timeline will depend on the outcomes of the ground investigations and the securing of additional funding.
"With these in place, it would be anticipated that the detailed design and procurement phase could commence in summer 2027 and be completed by winter 2027-28.
"Construction could then follow in spring 2028."
The foot and cycle bridge over Europa Way is listed as a separate project that is set to come forward "in due course".
