District planners have signed off on a scheme to install electric vehicle charging points at the stables car park at Warwick Castle.

Raw Charging Network Ltd had applied to build three charging points in the car park, allowing up to six cars to charge at a time.

The application said the points are needed to meet visitor demand.

"In order to ensure that the castle continues to be a successful attraction there is a requirement to restore and maintain its visitor numbers, appeal to wider age ranges and family groups and ensure the revenue stream that is vital for job creation and for repairs is secured," it said.

"As part of this, and in light of the climate crisis, the installation of EV vehicle charging to the stables car park is the beginning of the trend towards green energy and will allow visitors with electric vehicles to park and charge their vehicle while visiting the castle," it added.

"This is especially important for those visitors who have a greater journey time."

Signing off on the application, a Warwick District Council report said: "The pillars are low lying, adjacent to an existing 1.8m timber fence and will not obscure any important views, will not compete for attention with the listed buildings and will not have any unacceptable impact on the setting of the listed building, the conservation area or the scheduled ancient monument.

"This is confirmed by the stance of the statuatory consultees, none of whom raise any objections."

Last year Warwick Castle was granted permission to move its overflow car park closer to neighbouring homes.
