Locals hoping to be able to watch Sunday's (July 14) Euro 2024 final on a big screen in the area will be disappointed, with the council ruling out the possibility of creating a last minute fan park.

During the 2022 Commonwealth Games residents were able to watch the sporting action at a dedicated fan site in Warwick's Market Place, with a large screen erected in front of the Market Hall Museum.

However, with England's spot against Spain only guaranteed on Wednesday night, Warwick District Council has ruled out the possibility of a similar set up this weekend.

A council spokesperson said: "We are unable to put a screen up in the district because of the short notice and the amount of planning required to do this.

"We know the assembly in Leamington is screening the match, and there will be many more local places showing it for people to gather and cheer England on."

The Commonwealth Games setup in 2022 was run by Warwickshire County Council, but the local authority advised Nub News such events are usually administered by the district and borough councils.

Coventry City Council has also ruled out the possibility of a big screen in the city centre due to safety concerns.

Organising an event at short-notice would be "challenging" and demand would be too much, a spokesperson said.

Pubs in the district will be able to stay open for an extra two hours on Sunday night, until 1am. Venues with an 'on-licence' to sell booze until 11pm can do so on Sunday, July 14.

That is under a change to national licence rules for the last matches of the tournament and only apply if England or Scotland are playing.
