MP Matt Western advocates for local tribute to Lioness Jess Carter from Warwick after Euros win 2025

Following England's victory in the UEFA Women's European Football Championship yesterday (27 July), MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western has called for a way to honour one of the players.
Mr Western said it would be nice to see a statue or mural honouring Jess Carter, a key player in the team, who is originally from Warwick.
This comes after what Mr Western highlighted was an exceptional performance from Jess, especially in light of the online abuse she faced during the tournament.
He said: "To have our local Lioness, Jess, play a part in that is incredible.
"Her performance yesterday was outstanding, particularly in the face of the abuse she has faced this tournament from online trolls.
"That took real guts."
He continued to note that there are already calls for a statue to recognise Jess' contribution and show how "proud" Warwick is and added he'd also like to see a mural at the local site "that has been instrumental in Jess' career."
He is now starting a campaign so that the "next generation of footballers can see what she has achieved and that they could do the same. "
Mr Western said: "It's not often a twice European Champion hails from our towns! It's time to recognise it. "
While possible locations for the mural are being discussed, Mr Western has called for any thoughts from locals about where they think it could go.
Those who have an idea on where the mural could go should email [email protected] with 'Jess Carter mural' in the subject line.
"Let's show Jess how proud her hometown is."
