Months of disruption to motorists in Warwick is due to begin on Monday (13 October) as works around St John's get underway.
After years of planning and public consultations, Warwickshire County Council is due to start on the roadworks around the town centre junction, with the project expected to last until March 2026.
Eventually a shared cycleway/footpath will be created, new crossings installed, bike racks built and the service road outside the shops turned into a one-way road.
The local authority wants to "improve connectivity and enhance the experience for pedestrians, cyclists and business users" in the area.
This as well as making the area more attractive with "material enhancements outside the retail/commercial area while preserving as many parking bays as possible".
The existing traffic lights at St John's will also be upgraded and the roads around the junction are to have "essential maintenance".

Work will start on the central pedestrian area of the service road opposite Subway, "running simultaneously with works on the footway opposite St Johns Court".
Contractors will continue along the footway outside the shops heading north and are expected to finish the area on 5 December 2025.
The service road will be one way from 13 October, with access from Coventry Road.
No works will take place from 8 December 2025 until 5 January 2026.
Phase two will then start at the end of Smith Street, Priory Road and the crossroads and will continue until March 2026.
- "While there will be disruption during the works, we will endeavour to keep this to a minimum," the council said.
- "Parking spaces and loading/unloading areas will be affected, but the contractor will ensure some parking remains available throughout.
- "Access to frontages will be maintained at all times."Detailed plans for the works at St John's (image via Warwickshire County Council)
