A man has died and three people have been left injured after a flat fire on Friars Street yesterday evening.

Five fire engines, police and paramedics attended the Warwick town centre blaze last night.

The man – who is believed to be in his 60s – was taken to hospital where he died.

His next of kin have been informed but police are still awaiting formal identification.

Officers said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

Thirty people were evacuated from the three-storey block. They were then allowed to collect some belongings after the fire had been put out and are now in temporary accommodation.

Insp Simon Ryan said: "This was a terrible incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

"Enquiries continue but at this time we don't believe there to be any suspicious circumstances."

The chief executive of Warwick District Council, Chris Elliot, visited the scene this morning and the council said it is working with emergency services.

Cllr Jan Matecki, portfolio holder for housing said: "We are saddened to learn from the Police of one fatality and three injured residents and while we wait for the results of the police investigation, we will be offering support to those affected.

"We are also commissioning the repair work required for the damage to the flats, as a matter of urgency, to provide reassurance for tenants that their homes remain safe."

Anyone with information that can help police with their enquiries should call 101 quoting incident 301 of 4 May 2022.
