Locals out in force for Warwick pancake race
Tuesday (February 28) lunchtime saw Warwick Market Place close to bursting with children and local people competing in the annual pancake races organised by the Rotary Club of Warwick.
Competitors were cheered on in the cold and damp weather by over 100 children and a crowd of parents and passersby.
Organisers were delighted that despite the gloom, the tradition was kept alive – a week later than usual due to half-term.
Staff from The Globe Hotel circulated with trays of small pancakes which were gratefully received by the waiting crowd.
First to race were the Globe against two teams from local business Goodwill Ltd, newcomers to the field.
In a close run race The Globe, previous winners, beat off their opposition and collected bottles of Bucks Fizz awarded by Rotary President Keith Talbot and visiting Rotary District Governor John Parkinson.
Children from seven local primary schools then competed, with 26 teams of youngsters taking part.
Pupils from Year 2 at Emscote Primary were on good form and after winning two of the heats finally won the match. In the Year 6 races Aylesford Primary youngsters prevailed and won the trophy for this year.
Rotary President Keith Talbot and district governor John Parkinson presented prizes to the winning teams.
Winners all received 'goody bags' donated by Tesco including pancake ingredients to take home and make their own
President Keith Talbot said: "We were delighted that the day turned out so well, it was really buzzing with so much energy from all the children.
"This is one of the events we arrange for the local community, and we are delighted that local businesses have joined in."
