Is the third time the charm for controversial Aldi plans?
By James Smith 10th Jun 2026
Controversial plans to alter the car park at a local Aldi are set to go before councillors next week for the third time.
The issue around the access for the Tachbrook Park Drive store first went before the council's planning committee in January, but a decision was kicked down the road with more information sought from highways officers.
Warwick District Council was due to consider the application again in February but they were pulled from the agenda at the 11th hour.
Now they are scheduled to go before councillors again on Tuesday (16 June), with planning officers recommending approval be given.
A number of objections had been submitted, including from Warwick Town Council and from Cllr Becky Davidson who said residents were being "continuously lied to by developers, and let down by highways and planning".
Currently customers can only access Aldi's car park from the roundabout at the entrance to Leamington Shopping Park - something which was made a condition when planning approval for the building was first signed off.
But if plans are approved, the delivery entrance off Queensway would be made useable for shoppers.
Safety concerns over the proposals, which would see a 1.5-metre-wide pedestrian path painted in between parking spaces and moving vehicles, plus the prospect of rat-running vehicles cutting through the car park to avoid traffic signals at the Europa Way roundabout at busy times have been raised.
A council report said: "Since the consideration of this application at planning committee in January 2026 further clarification [h]as been sought from WCC highways authority in relation to rat-running through the site.
"WCC Highways Authority has advised that it is difficult to quantify how frequently rat-running may occur, however if it did they have advised that both accesses have sufficient space capacity to not result in a detriment to the public highway so the impacts would specifically be increased traffic within the site and how it may impact pedestrians.
"They have advised that this impact could be argued to be minimal as any vehicles travelling between the two access points would follow a specific route and the cross over between the route and route pedestrians are taking is minimal."
