With winter approaching, pensioners are being encouraged to check if they can claim Pension Credits, which will mean they are still eligible for the Winter Fuel payment.

Over £2,771,513 in Pension Credits could be going unclaimed in Warwick district, with 1,191 pensioners missing out on benefits according to, which include the Winter Fuel Payment according to social policy software company, Policy in Practice.

Pension Credit tops up income of £218.15 for single people or £332.95 joint income if you have a partner.

Labour councillor Dave Skinner is concerned local pensioners are not getting the pension credit that they are eligible for and is keen to make sure people know how to find out if they are eligible.

"We know with winter approaching people are worried about fuel bills," he said.

"A lot of people seem to think that the Winter Fuel payment has gone for everyone, but this is not true.

"Pensioners who need support can still get it and we know Pension Credits are underclaimed here.

"Apart from access to the Winter Fuel payment, Pension credits are worth £2,677 a year on average if you are eligible. People need to claim Pension Credit by 21 December to make sure they don't miss out.

"Even if pensioners do not qualify for Pension Credit, they can still get help, Local charity, Act on Energy, works with Warwick district Council to help with home energy efficiency, fuel debt and access to hardship funds.

"Despite efforts over the years, people are still unaware of support and we are campaigning to raise awareness now, so nobody struggles needlessly."

People can check their eligibility for Pension Credits at https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit-calculator.
