Council officers have given the green light for alcohol to be sold at events at a Warwick church.

St Mary's was issued the alcohol licence by Warwick District Council on Thursday (August 21).

The Old Square church now has permission for the sale of alcohol from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and from 12noon to 11pm on Sundays.

The licence also allows for St Mary's to host plays, films and live music between limited times for audiences over 500 people.

The church said events held at the church and run by external companies are strictly controlled.

"We have strict terms and conditions for external hirers to be able to hire the space in the church for events," it said.

"They have to provide their own door stewards, supply a risk assessment for their event, are instructed to be mindful of neighbours in the local area for noise after the event has finished, including loading and unloading and audience members leaving the premises.

"If an event has ticket sales, the guidelines are followed for age restrictions and children under that age would not be permitted to enter."

It continued: "We have CCTV inside and outside of the church premises.

"If at any event, alcohol is to be sold, we would always ask for photographic identification for that individual.

"If none can be provided, no sale will occur.

"Events held at St Marys Church have door stewards to bag search if necessary, control the flow of people entering the church for safety reasons and any audience member causing a nuisance would be escorted off the premises in a calm manner."

St Mary's has been approached for comment.
