'Disproportionate' plans for house at stables approved
By James Smith 21st May 2026
A four-bedroom home is set to be built at a local stables despite one councillor describing it as "disproportionate".
Cllr Kyn Aizlewood questioned the need for such a big property at Peacock Stables in Rowington, which is said to be needed as a 'rural worker's dwelling'.
A cabin had temporarily been stationed at the site for the past three years following a previous application, but now Warwick District Council's planning committee has approved designs for a permanent house.
The application has received 23 objections from locals who say there is no justification for the house and that it is too big for the area.
Rowington Parish Council has also objected saying a family house is bigger than a normal rural worker's cottage and there is no need for it on site.
The applicant has argued they need to be on site to look after the horses which are rehabilitating and to monitor the breeding program.
Speaking at this week's planning committee meeting, Cllr Aizlewood said: "It comes across as a disproportionate proposal for me. It is a proposal for a four-bedroom house in the green belt, to support a business with six horses.
"That seems disproportionate.
"I understand the argument with the exceptional circumstances; you as officers are satisfied that it meets the requirements and ticks a box.
"But when you stand back it is a proposal to build a four bedroom home in the green belt, and I have some reservations about that."
Councillors were assured conditions placed on the application would mean it could only be used for workers at the stables.
A report from planning officers recommended the application be approved.
Councillors unanimously waved it through.
