Warwick residents will only be able to see the Commonwealth Games baton if they receive an invitation to do so, the district council has confirmed.

The 16th official Queen's Baton Relay will reach Warwick district on the morning of Friday, July 22.

It will start the day on High Street in Kenilworth, being carried to Kenilworth Castle where residents will have the opportunity for photographs.

But with Warwick already set to host the cycling road race on August 7, the baton will only stop in the town for an exclusive photo stop at its castle.

The baton will then make its way to Whitnash, arriving at the civic centre and library at 9am, leaving at 9.40am.

A Warwick District Council spokesperson said: "We have four towns in Warwick district and have aimed to spread the involvement in the games across each town.

"Leamington Spa will host the lawn and para lawn bowls, Warwick the cycling road races, so we were delighted to be able to host The Queen's Baton Relay in Kenilworth, and Whitnash to get the whole district involved.

"The photo-stop at Warwick Castle is by invitation only on the morning of 22 July, a private event before the baton resumes the relay in Whitnash.

"The baton relay starts in High Street, Kenilworth, at 8am and will be making its way into the grounds of Kenilworth Castle from approximately 8.12am.

"The baton will then make its way to Whitnash, arriving at the Whitnash Civic Centre and Library at 9am and leaving at 9.40am."

The baton will start its journey in Kenilworth at the bottom of High Street

The district council and the Birmingham 2022 organisers are encouraging residents to come out to support the baton in Kenilworth and in Whitnash next week.

A Birmingham 2022 statement said: "Come out and cheer our batonbearers as they run along the streets in old town to the grounds of Kenilworth Castle.

"You can follow the baton through the castle grounds, and there will be the opportunity to have your photo taken alongside it."
