Warwick's much loved Victorian Evening returns today (November 25) as the town's Christmas lights will be switched on.

Following an afternoon of festivities a reception will be held at the Lord Leycester Hospital before a procession makes its way to Market Square for the Mayor of Warwick Cllr Richard Edgington to turn on the lights.

And residents are encouraged to make the most of the occassion by entering the annual competition for the best dressed victorian, with the winners announced at 7.30pm.

The Victorian market will start at 12pm, with the era-themed rides running from 3pm.

The main events will get underway at 5pm before the light switch on and the Christmas Tree Festival will be taking place in St Mary's Church.

Prizes for the costume competition include a one-night stay for a family of four at Warwick Castle, tickets for Warwick Racecourse and a free football-themed birthday party at St Nicholas Park.

Cllr Edgington said he "can't wait" for the event after the trials of the past year and a half.

"It's been a difficult 18 months for all concerned," he said.

"We've watched Warwick gradually come to life again in the past few months, with more people visiting from the local area and further afield and experiencing everything from the historic buildings and culture we have here to our great independent shops, pubs, bars and restaurants.

"We can't wait to bring some festive cheer to Warwick with our wonderful Victorian evening and Christmas lights switch-on. It's the perfect way to kick off the festive season in our fabulous town."

Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes on the night
