"This is a man's place", wrote writer Mary Raphael when she visited the Lord Leycester Hospital in the 1920s. Founded by a man, for men, with men as patrons and Masters of the institution, the Lord Leycester would have certainly looked like a man's place to outsiders, yet women have always played an important role in the history of the hospital. Digging into the archives gives us a glimpse into the role women have assumed over the centuries – from servants to the Master, from Wives to Sisters, from troublemakers to peacemakers, and much more
