MP says proposed quarry near Barford is a 'bad idea' and should be blocked

10th Sep 2024

Local MP Sir Jeremy Wright has said the proposed Wasperton Quarry, near Barford, is a "bad idea" and should not be built.

The Conservative MP has sided with local campaigners who he praised for their "highly effective" efforts to block the sand and gravel quarry at Wasperton Farm.

The 90 hectare site has already been included in Warwickshire County Council's latest mineral plan, despite criticism from councillors and MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western.

A planning application has since been lodged with the local authority, with Sir Jeremy encouraging locals to make sure they have their say at an upcoming public consultation.

"This site is not just good agricultural land - there are salad crops growing - but crucially, a little way over the hill, is the village of Barford; far too close in my view to a development such as this," he said in a video statement on his website.

"The concerns that everyone has about air quality, about traffic, about flooding, about all of these things - not to mention the loss of agricultural land - make this a bad idea.

"If you agree, if you live in this area, or if you are concerned about a development in an inappropriate area such as this, then you are going to have another opportunity to say so."

Sir Jeremy pointed locals towards the Barford Residents website for more information.

He did not give details on when the consultation would be launched, but added: "This application shouldn't be accepted and it is important that we all say so."
