With half-term on the horizon, parents are looking for the perfect family day out, packed with plenty to do, sights to see, fun for all ages - and affordable for everyone.

As one of the most historic towns in the UK, Warwick is packed with plenty to do for families, from activities and trails to parks and events.

Warwick may be well-known for its castle, which at over 1,000 years old is the best preserved fortress in England and a great spot for a family day out, but there are plenty of other things for families to do in the town, making it the perfect place for a cheap day trip this half term.

1. Tour the town on one of Warwick's free trails

Warwick is a town steeped in history and its interesting architecture, from medieval buildings to Georgian townhouses, make it picture-perfect for a wander around.

The perfect way to take in the town's highlights and hidden gems is through its family-friendly trails.

The Town Break Trail - a 48-hour trail including its historic buildings and quirky cultural hotspots - and the Guy of Warwick trail, which brings the town's own Game of Thrones-style legend to life. Dubbed 'England's Forgotten Hero', the story of Guy of Warwick dates back to the 10th Century and is full of drama, romance and tragedy.

The trail, produced by the town's Guy of Warwick Society, leads visitors around the town, encouraging them to solve puzzles and find clues, with the free augmented reality app allowing people to hear the hero himself explain his life and adventures.

Both trails are available online as well as in paper format from Warwick Visitor Centre.

2. Join in family-friendly activities at the Market Hall Museum

The Market Hall Museum in the traditional Market Square tells the story of Warwickshire, and how the shifting natural and human landscapes have shaped the county to the present day.

Its popular exhibits include everything from The Museum Bear to an observation beehive, Roman silver coin hoards and an historic costume display.

There are also regular events for children and an augmented reality exhibit, making it the perfect place for families to visit while in Warwick.

The museum is staging free family events this half term, including a Free STEM Day on Tuesday 18th February from 10am-2pm.

Race your friends with our Scalextric track, make a marble run and challenge yourself to build a museum object from Lego. There is no need to book for the free drop-in event and donations are welcomed.

The museum is also hosting a Super Circuits workshop. Get creative with electric ink! Paint a light-up circuit and design your own circuit to take home. Play with interactive touch boards and see if you can make a piano from a banana!

The workshop lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Recommended for ages 7 and over, younger children are welcome but will need to be individually accompanied by an adult. £5 + a booking fee per child.

Book a timed workshop online.

3. Play in St Nicholas Park

St Nicholas Park is the perfect place for a family day out, offering children's play areas, a fun park, adventure mini golf, and a skate park - not to mention a great place for a picnic.

An easy walk from the town centre, it has everything for children of all ages and is easy to access.

4. Climb to the top of the tower at St Mary's and check out its augmented reality experience

Warwick has an array of historic attractions - all of which offer regular family-friendly activities and exhibitions.

Visit the Collegiate Church of St Mary and you'll be in one of the largest churches in Britain, with an iconic tower providings glorious views of the town and the surrounding countryside.

There is also an augmented reality experience that brings the history of the tower and the church to life using state-of-the-art technology.

5. Take advantage of free workshops and activities at independent businesses

Warwick is teeming with independent businesses - some of whom are laying on workshops for children.

Create on Smith Street, just a stone's throw from St Nicholas Park, is running t-shirt painting and felt-making workshops on Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 February.

Timings are 10.30am-1pm, costing £25 for a parent and child, and £5 for an extra sibling.

6. Take a family boat trip down the Avon

And while it is not open to Easter, Warwick Boats has a range of vessels, including pedalos, traditional row boats, canoes and kayaks - even swans or dragons!

A family boat trip is the perfect way to enjoy unrivalled views of Warwick Castle and have some fun at the same time.

They can also provide canoe and kayak courses and birthday parties for children and adults, dragon boat racing for youth and corporate groups, as well as exclusive evening parties with the boats included.

Warwick Boats is open from Easter to October for courses and boat hire, with boats available to hire from 10am to 5.30pm every day of the summer (subject to the weather) and can be prebooked here.
