Warwick MP's Column: Ticket offices, wildfires and climate change
By Matt Western MP

As many of you will have seen, it was announced last month that the consultation on the closure of nearly all of our ticket offices in England has been extended until 1 September.
This is an improvement on the original 21 days given, an incredibly short amount of time considering the real impact these closures would have on so many across the country.
I know how many people locally are really concerned by the prospect of the ticket offices at Leamington, Warwick and Warwick Parkway closing and have joined me in my opposition by signing my petition and submitting their thoughts to the consultation.
I spoke to ITV Central about the issue last month and expressed my concerns on the impact these changes would have on disabled and elderly passengers who may not be able to travel independently without the assistance and support of the ticket office teams.
The machines offered as an alternative can't provide the same level of advice that a member of the team can and aren't always accessible for all passengers.
You can sign my petition on my website and can submit your thoughts to the consultation (closes on 1 September) here.
I was alarmed by the footage and stories coming out of Greece as wildfires swept through the region causing widespread damage to the area and terrifying scenes for those on the islands affected.
The wildfires burned as southern Europe saw a sweltering heatwave with some areas reporting record breaking high temperatures.
We're seeing the effects of climate change in action and the devastating impact it's having on our planet.
As we see these undeniable demonstrations of climate change, it's incredibly disappointing to see reports that the Government is considering backtracking on environment commitments that have never been more vital. It becomes clearer every day that we need to focus on taking serious action to tackle climate change.
It is increasingly concerning that it appears we have a Prime Minister that doesn't see tackling climate change as a real priority. Last month, he announced he would grant 100 new North Sea oil and gas licences claiming it is "entirely consistent" with net zero commitments.
This will have no effect on the soaring energy bills people across the country are having to pay, nor will it create good jobs and it will be completely wrong for the planet. We can't continue with a business-as-usual approach to climate change and must take the threat seriously.
