Matt Western: New government, looking ahead and summer holidays
It has been another hectic week of getting settled back into Parliament after the election.
Earlier this month, I had the honour of being sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Warwick and Leamington for the third time.
It felt and continues to feel as much of an honour as it did back in 2017 and 2019. I'll always be so proud to represent the area I am so lucky to call home and will continue to represent you and our towns and villages to the best of my ability. Thank you again for your support.
Last week, we had the first Kings Speech of this Parliament, where the new Labour Government laid out their plans for the next five years.
From renationalising our railways, cleaning up our rivers and waterways to free breakfast clubs in every primary school and a new deal for working people, the plans announced were hugely welcome and I know will really benefit our communities.
We have also been seeing a number of announcements from the new government in the chamber. I was present last week when our new Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, announced that we are restoring funding to UNRWA following the Colonna Report.
A hugely welcome move and one that I had called for the previous government to commit to back in April. This funding will help provide the essential aid to innocent, suffering Palestinians in Gaza.
The scenes coming out of Gaza continue to be beyond horrific and I welcome the new Government continuing to push for the ceasefire that is so desperately needed.
Finally, as many of our local schools enjoy the first week of the summer holidays, I want to say a huge thank you to all the teachers and staff who work in our nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities for all you do.
I'm lucky to visit many education settings locally and am always so impressed by the sheer enthusiasm and dedication you put into giving students the best start in life and preparing them for their next steps.
Your work is invaluable, thank you. I hope you get a hugely deserved rest over the summer break.
To all pupils across our towns and villages, well done for completing another year at school.
It has been a pleasure to meet so many of you over the past year and I hope you have an enjoyable summer! I know there will be a lot of pupils who will be moving onto senior school and many who have finished school and will be going onto further and higher education.
May I wish you the best of luck in this next step and every success for this next phase of your education.
As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise with me. I can be reached on [email protected] or on 01926 882006.
