Matt Western: Labour conference, Myron Hospice and anti-social behaviour
As many of you will know, Parliament is currently in what is known as 'Conference Recess' while the various party conferences take place across the country.
I have spent part of this week up in Liverpool where the Labour Party Conference took place and have welcomed the chance to visit many of the stalls around the conference centre, particularly a few that matter to so many people in the constituency.
I've had valuable discussions with the British Heart Foundation, the League against Cruel Sports in relation to the real issues we continue to have with hunting in Warwickshire, The MCS Foundation about heat pumps, Cancer Research UK about how we can improve outcomes for cancer patients, the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education on the importance of teaching religious education in our schools, Warwick Manufacturing Group re growth, innovation and skills locally and Guide Dogs where I was delighted to express my continuing support and of course meet Questa the guide dog.
Conference is a chance to hear important speeches from key people in the party about our plans for the country.
This was the first conference since 2009 that Labour have been the party of government, and these speeches now not only outline policy the party will be pushing for but policy we are now able to implement.
From a new 'Hillsborough Law' to create a legal duty of candour on public authorities, a Plan to Make Work Pay, to a mission to halve knife crime in a decade, to free school breakfast clubs and housing for care leavers, victims of domestic abuse and veterans, I look forward to sharing more about what these policies will do for our communities in the coming weeks and months.
As always, recess is a welcome opportunity to spend more time in the constituency, meeting with key stakeholders, members of the community and discussing issues that concern local people.
Last week, I was proud to join Myton Hospice as they launched their Urgent Appeal to raise £240,000 to ensure more people can access the hospice beds they need.
I know so many people locally have received support from Myton Hospice and the work they do is so valued.
I spent some time last week with some of our local on the beat police officers to hear firsthand from them more about the issues that are concerning and impacting our communities and what they are doing to address these problems.
Anti-social behaviour repeatedly came up as a key issue, across Warwick, Leamington and Whitnash, and the work they are doing to address this behaviour is much welcome.
If you have any particular concerns you would like me to raise with the police during these meetings, please do drop me an email.
As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise with me. I can be reached on [email protected] or on 01926 882006.
