Dame Judi Dench has backed the campaign to block a new sand and gravel quarry being built in the village of Barford.

The famous actor features at the start of a new nine-minute video released by campaigners to raise awareness of the "grave uncertainty" they face over the plans for the 90 hectare development.

"As someone who has spent many many very happy years in this particular part of the country, it distresses me terribly that this landscape which I know and I love so much may be destroyed," Dame Judi says.

Both Dame Judi's mother and her late husband (fellow actor Michael Williams) are buried in nearby Charlecote churchyard.

The video also features local MP Matt Western speaking out against the plans, as well as interviews with many local residents who say they are now "at the mercy of Warwickshire County Council".

"It is far too near to peoples' housing, to our school, to people who have lived here all their lives," one resident said.

Others say the quarry is "surplus to requirements" and "in the wrong place".

The 90 hectare site - on land currently owned by St John's College, Oxford - has already been included in Warwickshire County Council's latest mineral plan, despite criticism from councillors and politicians.

A planning application has since been lodged with the local authority, with MP for Kenilworth and Southam Sir Jeremy Wright encouraging locals to make sure they have their say at an upcoming public consultation.

The company behind the quarry - Smiths Concrete - is expected to submit responses to a series of questions from the local authority in the coming weeks.

Residents will then be given a chance to respond.
