A campaign to tell Warwick's untold stories as part of English Tourism Week has been shown to have proved a huge hit, reaching hundreds of thousands of people online.

Warwick Town Council launched the campaign to coincide with English Tourism Week last month, using it to promote the historic town and some of its stories and key figures to a wider audience who might not have known about them.

The tales, including the background behind a network of underground tunnels and the story of the town's Medieval Court Leet, as well as often-forgotten figures such as boxer Dick Turpin and car designer Donald Healey, were shared via social media posts by the council throughout English Tourism Week, helping to remind people locally and further afield just how much Warwick has to offer.

George Palmer, Finance & Communications Officer at Warwick Town Council, said: "Our campaign for English Tourism Week was a wonderful opportunity to showcase exactly how much Warwick has to offer that people - locally and further afield - might not have known about.

"We're thrilled by the response to the campaign and the number of people it reached. People loved hearing the stories that make Warwick what it is today and the number of positive comments and people sharing their own memories has been amazing.

"We have shared the success with Visit Britain, who are behind English Tourism Week, and they were impressed too, so we are now in discussions on how we can strengthen our tourism partnership with them, which can only be good for Warwick.

"Warwick may be a small county town, but this is yet another example of how the rich history and the stories within our town really do capture people's imagination. Couple this with our wonderful community, packed events calendar, and strong independent enterprise, and you've got a really special place. We're just glad so many people have been able to see that and we look forward to continuing to spread the word."

Now, having reviewed the success of the campaign, Warwick Town Council can reveal that it resulted in an incredible social media reach of over 300,000 people, leading to online conversations, positive responses and a growth in followers for both the council's account and the account for Warwick's Visitor Information Centre.

The three most popular posts covered Warwick's hidden underground tunnels, the town's connection with Lord of the Rings author J.R.R.Tolkien and the history behind Warwick Common.

News of the success of the campaign comes as Warwick Town Council also recently confirmed that it has submitted a bid to be the UK's Town of Culture - another key moment for the town.
