A Warwick school previously told by Ofsted that it required improvement is "beyond happy" to have received its first 'good' rating from the watchdog.

The Emscote School - which provides places for children who cannot attend mainstream school - was found to make pupils "feel safe and settled" following an inspection at the end of 2023.

Inspectors said staff prioritise getting to know the pupils, who arrive at the Nelson Lane establishment "having experienced disruption to their education".

With space for up to 48 pupils, Emscote was praised for improving students' behaviour and for providing high levels of pastoral care.

"There is a positive fresh start approach that builds pupils' self-belief," the report said.

"Pupils appreciate that they have a second chance at school.

"Leaders hold high expectations of pupils and what they can achieve.

"They make sure that staff understand the individual needs of all pupils.

"Staff establish positive learning routines.

"This motivates pupils to reconnect with their education."

Students are said to leave well prepared for their next steps, having "learned about themselves" and gained key skills.

Ofsted in particular recognised that many children arrive with gaps in their education, but receive a curriculum that supports them over time.

The school - which was rated requires improvement in June 2022 - was also said to be improving attendance and supporting wider development.

However, Emscote was told to improve identifying gaps in reading and phonics.

The report also said: "Some areas of the curriculum, such as some foundation subjects, are not as well developed as others.

"This means that teaching does not always build on what pupils already know and can do. Pupils are unable to make connections in their learning.

"Therefore, they do not retain as much content as they could. The school should continue to develop the curriculum to ensure that it is equally well planned in all subjects."

Following the publication of the report, principal Parneet Kang said to Nub News: "The Emscote School are beyond happy with our Ofsted report and will strive to continue to adapt and improve our way of working for our students.

"We are a new school and the team has worked hard at achieving this improved rating.

"We are always looking for placement students and graduates who can come and join us in our exciting journey."
