Warwick has not been included in the eight new cities named as part of Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The town council had launched its bid to become a city last October, stating that it was the "perfect opportunity to showcase its civic pride, our historic and cultural identity".

But the county town was not included in the record number of winners announced by the cabinet office today.

The winners were:

  • Bangor, Northern Ireland
  • Colchester, England
  • Doncaster, England
  • Douglas, Isle of Man
  • Dunfermline, Scotland
  • Milton Keynes, England
  • Stanley, Falkland Islands
  • Wrexham, Wales

Almost 40 locations from across the UK and beyond put forward their bid to become a city last year in the Platinum Jubilee civic honours competition.

Each town had to show their cultural heritage and royal links as well as how their local identity and communities meant they deserved to become a city.

The applications were then reviewed by a panel of experts and cabinet office ministers, before a recommendation was put to Her Majesty The Queen who had the final say.

Warwick's bid had been backed by Warwick District Council and MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western.

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries congratulated the winners on the "huge accolade".

"This competition showcases the best of Britain and the Overseas Territories and will act as a lasting legacy of Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee," she said.

Alcester and Dudley also missed out.
