Warwick MP's column: Quarry plans and community awards
Last week was February Recess so I was back home in the constituency for the week.
It was a great chance to catch up with our community and hear from constituents about the issues that matter to them.
It was powerful to see a huge turnout of pupils from Barford Primary School last week as they handed over their letters of objection about the proposed quarry to the county council.
The pupils' strength of feeling was clear in their letters and the protest they held outside Shire Hall in Warwick.
They would be some of the worst affected if the quarry went ahead with the proposed site sitting just 650 metres from their school.
It was deeply disappointing that a member of the council wasn't available to receive the letters particularly on such an important issue.
I've been proud to stand alongside local residents in their longstanding campaign and will continue to do so to ensure their health is not put at risk.
Later in the week, I held my third annual MP Awards which was an incredible chance to highlight the brilliant individuals, teams, businesses and organisations from the public and volunteer sectors who do so much to make our community such a great place to live and work.
I was joined by Phil Upton from BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, a voice many will recognise from his morning radio show, to host the awards. We heard from Jess Carter and Lewis Williams, two outstanding local sports stars who were raised locally and have gone to be hugely successful in their fields of football and boxing respectively.
The special guests of the evening were the fantastic nominees from across our community who were all so deserving of their nominations – from supporting the people of Ukraine to keeping our streets clean, they all go above and beyond to make sure our towns and villages are the best they can be.
A big congratulations to all the nominees and finalists and of course a special mention to the winners: individual winners were Amanda Burford, Dawid Kozlowski and Helen Aris, the community group winner was the Polish Centre and the two winners for the business and team category were Rethink, Grapevine and Experts by Experience and Make Good Grow. Thank you for all you do.
I'd also like to thank Purple Monster studios in Warwick and their team for all their efforts behind the scenes to make the event happen. A great local business who I've been supporting for a number of years.
As always, please do get in touch with any queries or concerns. I can be reached at [email protected] or on 01926 882006.
