The leader of Warwick District Council has said now is not the time for a general election, following the resignation of Liz Truss today (October 20).
The prime minister announced the end time in office after just 44 days today during a speech outside No. 10.
But with calls from opposition parties for another election Conservative council leader Cllr Andrew Day said he does not think that is what voters actually want.
"What people want is a reduction in the interest rates on their mortgages and some stability in the economy," he told Nub News.
"An election campaign, particularly a winter election campaign is going to be drawn out and create a lot of uncertainty and the things that we don't need."
He added: "We have got to realise that we are in a parliamentary democracy, we vote for an MP that goes and represents us down in Westminster to form a government.
"It is not a presidency, so I don't see going to a general election just now really suits us."
The Bishop's Tachbrook councillor also said Ms Truss' resignation had brought "clarity" and "stability".
But with the Tory leadership race expected to be concluded by the end of next week, Cllr Day said he did not know who he wanted as the new leader.
He said "there is a lot of talent" but urged members to "consider all parts of the party and not just one particular group".
And asked what the Conservative party needs to do to regain confidence from voters he said: "Focus on the day job and get back to doing what we are there to do and that is look after our residents and our communities.
"At the moment they are facing tough decisions around the kitchen table every day about where they are going to put their time and resources, whether their jobs are safe and whether they can keep their mortgage.
"We need to make sure we can put politics aside and start supporting our communities."
