Major redevelopment plans for a Hatton petrol station have been given the green light by district planners.

Last year Shell UK revealed plans to demolish and rebuild the current sales building at its Hertford Hill site, and to build a new EV charging "hub".

The application to Warwick District Council also included more parking spaces and said the new kiosk would create an "improved shopping environment".

Signing off on the application a council report said: "Subject to conditions and notes the development is not considered to give rise to harm to the character of the area, heritage assets, residential amenity, flood risk, highway safety and parking, climate change and mitigation or ecology/biodiversity.

"When considering all the relevant material planning considerations within the planning balance the proposal is considered to represent a sustainable form of development and it is recommended that planning permission be granted."

Shell - which claims there are 30,000 fewer petrol stations nationwide compared to 60 years ago - said the project reflects the rising demand from customers.

The scheme will see no changes made to the current forecourt, and access to the site will remain the same.

"Fewer service stations are serving more motorists," the application said.

"As a result, those individual service stations which remain and any new facilities are becoming increasingly busier, experiencing a greater volume of visitation rates and a greater throughput of fuel and are, thus, being made to work much more intensively."

The company, which runs 1,000 petrol stations in the UK, also says it is "encouraging the take-up of electric vehicles" by providing rapid charging points on many of its petrol stations.

Plans show that four EV charging points will be built.
