Designs and locations for new wayfinding signs across Warwick have been given the green light by the district council.

Having slightly amended its plans since first submitting the application, Warwick Town Council now has permission to remove the existing finger posts from across the town to make way for a number of new information boards, signs and updated finger posts.

Warwick District Council has granted an application for 31 new signs, which will help support the town become a "world class place in which to live, work and visit".

The application said the signs will make a "comprehensive pedestrian wayfinding strategy and signage design scheme" for Warwick.

"Design influences from the mediaeval period combined with the strong historic and visual references of the architecture, castle and gardens underpin the overarching concept," the application said.

"The design proposes to use sympathetic yet robust materials and finishes, developing a sensitive design that responds to the historical context of Warwick.

"Key design features include visual reference to bronze and exposed fixing details that feature in structures around town.

"The typeface proposed has been selected from historical research and past references found within the town.

"The typeface respects the heritage of the town whilst simultaneously moving into a contemporary discourse."

Plans say the signs will help encourage visitors to wander and explore Warwick.

Signing off on the application, a district council report said: "The proposed signage is considered to be of a scale, frequency and design that is in keeping with the surrounding local area and is considered to be an improvement over and above the existing signs.

"Some of the proposed signage is larger in scale, however, this is considered necessary in order to display the relevant information.

"The frequency and design of the signage is considered to be similar to the existing signage.

"Where new signage is proposed it is considered appropriate for it to fulfil its purpose whilst not having a detrimental impact to the design of the street scene or being harmful to any designated heritage asset."
