Plans for a multi-million-pound scheme to tackle congestion at a bottleneck junction on the A46 have received "widespread backing" after a series of consultation events.

National Highways said 66 per cent of responses about the upgrade of the A46 Walsgrave junction, east of Coventry, said the work was needed.

Two fifths said they "strongly agreed" with the works.

Just 10 per cent said they disagreed or strongly disagreed.

The proposed new look junction – known as a grade separated junction – would allow for a "free flowing" A46 carriageway while also enabling road users to enter and exit the local road network.

As well as removing the bottleneck that causes substantial congestion on the outskirts of Coventry, National Highways said the scheme upgrade will bring "smoother and more reliable journeys" for drivers using this road every day.

Some 229 responses were received to the consultation.

Some people reportedly expressed concern around the safety of the existing junction, particularly if trying to join the A46 from the B4082.

And there were requests for a hospital link road to be included in the upgrade.

A link is part of Coventry City Council's local plan which has allocated land for housing and a blue light access from the A46.

National Highways project manager, Emma Winter, said: "We are grateful to each and every person who took time to see us or respond to the consultation. It is important that we take on board the views of local communities and drivers which will further help us shape this significant upgrade.

"The A46 is a key link between the East and West Midlands and connects Coventry and Warwickshire to the motorway network. But the congestion at Walsgrave is impacting on journey times, communities and businesses.

"Our planned improvements will alleviate that congestion and provide an economic boost for communities across the region."
